Product Description:

Calcium chloride is an inorganic compound composed of calcium (Ca²⁺) and chloride (Cl⁻) ions, with the chemical formula CaCl₂. It exists in anhydrous form (CaCl₂) or hydrate form (such as CaCl₂·2H₂O, CaCl₂·6H₂O), usually as colorless crystals or white particles/powders.

Calcium chloride is easily soluble in water, with extremely high solubility and significant hygroscopicity (absorbing moisture from the air). It naturally exists in seawater, salt lakes, or certain minerals, but in industry it is often obtained through the reaction of limestone with hydrochloric acid or as a byproduct of the Solvay process for alkali production.

Features:

Physical and Chemical Properties

Strong hygroscopicity: Calcium chloride easily absorbs moisture and can even deliquesce into a liquid, making it commonly used as a desiccant.

High solubility: It exhibits extremely high solubility in water (approximately 74.5 g/100 mL at 20 ℃), and the dissolution process releases heat violently.

Low freezing point: The freezing point of an aqueous solution is significantly lowered (e.g., the freezing point of a 30% solution is about -50 ℃), making it suitable for snow melting agents.

Melting point/boiling point: Anhydrous calcium chloride has a melting point of approximately 772 ℃ and a boiling point greater than 1600 ℃.

Complexation: It can form complexes with substances like ammonia and ethanol (e.g., CaCl 2 · 4NH ∝).

Chemical Activity

Reacts with sulfates and carbonates: Calcium chloride reacts with sulfates and carbonates to form precipitates (e.g., CaSO 4 and CaCO 3 ).

Reactivity with oxides: It can react with oxides such as silica at high temperatures.

Safety

Corrosive nature of high concentration solutions: Solutions with high concentrations of calcium chloride are corrosive to metals and concrete, so caution should be exercised when handling them.

Applications:

Roads and Transportation

Snow melting agent: Calcium chloride lowers the melting point of ice and snow, quickly melting road snow.

Dustproof agent: Calcium chloride is sprayed on dirt roads to suppress dust by utilizing its hygroscopicity.

Industrial Sector

Desiccant: Calcium chloride is used for drying gases such as air, nitrogen, hydrocarbons, or industrial equipment to prevent moisture.

Concrete additives: Calcium chloride accelerates cement hardening and improves early strength.

Oil extraction: Calcium chloride is used to prepare high-density drilling fluid to stabilize oil well pressure.

Food and Medicine

Food additives: Calcium chloride is used as coagulants (such as tofu production), preservatives, or electrolyte supplements (sports drinks).

Medical use: Calcium chloride is used to treat hypocalcemia, as an ingredient in anti-allergic injections, or as an anticoagulant for blood banks.

Environmental Protection and Chemical Industry

Wastewater treatment: Calcium chloride aids in the sedimentation of pollutants such as phosphates and fluorides, and adjustment of pH value.

Refrigeration system: Calcium chloride is used as a low-temperature refrigerant (such as in a cooling bath).

Laboratory reagents: Calcium chloride is used for drying gases, catalyzing reactions, or preparing other calcium salts.

Other Purposes

Agriculture: Calcium chloride foliar fertilizers supplement calcium elements and regulate soil pH.

Plastic industry: Calcium chloride is used as an additive to improve material properties.
